Welcome to St.Mary's Parish Website

Pastor’s Corner

Dear parishioners,

This week, we present a very precious service in our parish: our parish library. Here is Bill Murphy, our librarian, on our parish library:

Question:  Do you know one of the best kept secrets in the Archdiocese of Vancouver?  Well, if not the Archdiocese then, at least in Saint Mary’s Parish?

Answer: Saint Mary’s is one of the few parishes in the Lower Mainland to have a catalogued Parish Library.

Most of the collection has been built around donations.  It began when Sister Katherine Nickerson, S. C. H., (a teacher and then principal at Notre Dame) retired in the Parish to work with Father Cuddy.  When her health deteriorated, she moved to the Motherhouse in Halifax, Nova Scotia, leaving us boxes of books.

Now that you know that we have a library, come and check it out.  It is located in the multi-purpose room in the Church basement.  The collection is, of course, Catholic and currently has over 2, 500 items, both print and DVDs, covering such topics as the Bible, prayer and the spiritual life, Church history, Catholic biography, and Christian fiction–topics not covered in the Public Libraries.

With Advent and Christmas coming you might want to consider borrowing material from this part of the collection to nourish your spiritual life.

One way to get to know Jesus is to learn about His close friends, the saints.  Biographies of the saints show us how they followed Him and can inspire us to know, love and serve God.

Christian fiction is good light reading and very different from the topics in many novels and the media these days.

You can connect to the on-line catalogue from any computer through the Parish Website.  Go to stmarysvancouver.ca.  Click on Parish Ministries. Scroll down and click on “Parish Library”.  You can now search by Author, Title, Subject.  It is also possible to search by Keywords, Genres and Lists.

Volunteers are in the Library for half an hour on Sunday morning after the 8:30, 9:30 and 11:15 Masses.  If you would like to volunteer send an email to davidicus@hotmail.com or leave a message with Marianne at the Parish Office. We hope to have volunteers after all the Sunday masses! So consider signing up as a volunteer after the mass that you regularly attend.

Donations of books and DVDs materials are always welcome.  What is not added to the collection will be given to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

Thanks Bill, for this very informative text, and may God bless your ministry with lots of visitors!
