Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near

The prophet Isaiah, in the first reading of this Sunday, gives us a beautiful and urgent invitation: “Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6). These words are not merely a reminder to pray occasionally; they are a call to make God the centre and direction of our lives.
We live in a world filled with many voices competing for our attention. We seek success, security, recognition, comfort and happiness. Yet, in the midst of all these pursuits, Isaiah reminds us that there is only one lasting fulfilment: to seek the Lord Himself.
What does it mean to seek the Lord? It means to turn our hearts toward Him—to make time for prayer, to listen to His Word, to participate faithfully in the Eucharist, to receive the Sacraments, and to recognize His presence in the people and circumstances of our daily lives. Seeking God is not simply finding Him in extraordinary moments; it is learning to discover Him in ordinary life.
Isaiah also reminds us that “my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD” (Isaiah 55:8). How often we become discouraged because God does not act according to our plans or timetable! Yet faith teaches us to trust that God sees what we cannot see. His wisdom is greater than ours, and His plans are guided by love.
The Gospel of the workers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1–16) reinforces this truth. The landowner reminds us that God’s generosity cannot be measured by our calculations. His mercy is not something we earn; it is a gift. Whether we have followed Him for many years or are only now turning toward Him, the Lord continues to call us into His vineyard.
Let us therefore not postpone our return to God. Whatever our past, whatever our struggles, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with boldness” (Hebrews 4:16). God is near. His invitation is before us today.
May we seek Him with sincere hearts, call upon Him with confidence, and trust His ways even when we do not understand them. And may our parish always be a place where every person can encounter the God who is searching for us even as we search for Him.
