PC-09.27.2026 - Putting our YES into action

by Joseph D'Souza, OP

Dear Parish Family,

This weekend, the Church invites us to reflect on our response to God’s call. In the Gospel, a father asks his two sons to go and work in his vineyard. One initially says “no,” but later changes his mind and goes. The other says “yes,” but does not go. Jesus reminds us that ultimately, our faith is shown not only by what we say, but by what we do.

This connects us with St. Paul’s words: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3). Christ Himself is our model. Though He was divine, He emptied Himself and took the form of a servant. Christian life is a life of humble service.

This weekend we also observe the World Day of Migrants and Refugees. The Church asks us to remember the millions of people who have been forced to leave their homes because of war, persecution, poverty, violence or other difficult circumstances. Behind every migrant and refugee is a human story—a family, a dream, a struggle and a hope. As Pope Francis has often reminded us, we are called to welcome, protect, promote and integrate those who are displaced. May we never allow differences of nationality, language or culture to prevent us from seeing the dignity of our brothers and sisters.

We also celebrate World Children’s Day, reminding us of our responsibility to protect, love and nurture every child. Children are not simply the future of the Church; they are a precious part of our parish family today.

And I have some particularly joyful news to share. Chalice has written to thank St. Mary’s Parish for sponsoring 23 children. When representatives of the Chalice were here last year, appealing for sponsors, you responded with such generosity. Your response touched my heart. Thank you! Through your generosity, 23 children and their families are experiencing greater hope and opportunity.

Dear parishioners, this is what it means to be a Christian community. We do not simply say “yes” to God—we put our “yes” into action.

May St. Mary’s always be a parish where the stranger is welcomed, children are cherished, those in need are supported, and Christ is recognized in every person we meet.

With gratitude and prayers,
Fr. Joseph
