Brothers and sisters in Christ,
Pentecost is the summit of Easter — the 50th day of the Resurrection, the birthday of the Church, and the beginning of her mission to the world. The risen Jesus fulfills his promise by pouring out the Holy Spirit upon the apostles gathered in prayer.
In the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit comes as “a rush of a violent wind” and as “tongues, as of fire” (Acts 2:2-3). These powerful biblical symbols reveal who the Holy Spirit is and what he does. Scripture also speaks of the Spirit as breath, living water, oil, dew, light, and dove. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force or emotion, but the Third Person of the Holy Trinity — the Lord and Giver of Life.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus breathes on the disciples and says: “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:22). Just as God breathed life into Adam in Genesis, the risen Christ breathes new life into the Church. Pentecost is the beginning of a new creation.
Without the Holy Spirit, Christian life becomes dry and powerless. The ancient prayer attributed to Patriarch Ignatius of Antioch reminds us:
“Without the Holy Spirit, Christ remains in the past, the Gospel is a dead letter, the Church is simply an organization… But in the Holy Spirit… the Gospel is the power of life.”
Saint Paul reminds us that “there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4). The Holy Spirit gives charisms and gifts for the building up of the Church and the mission of evangelization. The grace of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal has helped many rediscover that the Holy Spirit is alive and active today, bringing healing, joy, prayer, conversion, and missionary zeal.
The saints were men and women filled with the Holy Spirit. Saint Catherine of Siena burned with divine courage and wisdom. Saint Philip Neri radiated joy and the fire of God’s love.
Pentecost is not only an event of the past. The Holy Spirit still renews hearts, families, parishes, and the whole Church today. Our world needs disciples on fire with the Holy Spirit.
So today let us pray with faith: “Lord, send forth your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.”
