As we come to the end of July, this will be our last Pastor's Corner until September, as we take a short break during the month of August. I encourage everyone to stay connected with parish life through our website and social media platforms, where you will find updates on Masses, events, and other parish activities.
This weekend, the Church celebrates the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, established by Pope Francis in 2021. It is a beautiful reminder that our grandparents and elderly are not simply people who have grown old; they are living treasures of faith, wisdom, sacrifice, and love. They have walked the journey before us, carried families through difficult times, and passed on values that continue to shape our lives.
As people age, they often face loneliness, declining health, loss of independence, and the pain of feeling forgotten. Their pace may be slower, their memories less sharp, and their needs greater. Yet their dignity remains unchanged. They deserve not our impatience or judgment, but our respect, understanding, and loving presence.
Pope Francis often reminded us that "the elderly are not leftovers; they are precious witnesses of hope." They have stories to tell, lessons to share, and prayers to offer. We need them just as much as they need us. A visit, a phone call, a shared meal, or simply listening with patience can bring immense joy to someone who may otherwise feel alone.
Let us also remember that the way we treat our elderly today is the way future generations will learn to treat us. A society that honours its grandparents is a society that values life, memory, and love.
On this World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, let us thank God for the gift of our grandparents and all senior members of our parish. May we never take them for granted. Instead, may we accompany them with compassion, cherish their presence, and ensure that they always know they are loved, valued, and an indispensable part of our parish family.
