9-Day Novena in Preparation for the Nativity of Mother Mary
Who is Jesus

PC-06.28.2026 - When Christ is First

by Joseph D'Souza, OP

Dear Parishioners,

In a world filled with competing priorities, Jesus invites us to ask a simple but profound question: What occupies the first place in my heart? Our answer to that question shapes every aspect of our lives.

Many people mistakenly think that placing Christ first means loving others less. In reality, the opposite is true. When Christ becomes the center of our lives, our capacity to love grows deeper and more authentic. Our relationships are purified of selfishness and enriched by patience, forgiveness, generosity, and compassion. As Saint Augustine wisely said, "Love God, and do what you will." (Homily 7 on the First Epistle of John). When our hearts are rooted in God, our actions naturally reflect His love.

Christian discipleship is not merely about believing certain truths; it is about allowing Christ to transform us from within. Through Baptism, we have been given a new identity and a new way of living. Every day, we are called to leave behind attitudes that separate us from God and one another and embrace a life marked by faith, hope, and charity. Pope Francis reminds us that "faith is not a light that scatters all our darkness, but a lamp which guides our steps in the night." Following Christ does not remove every challenge, but it gives us the courage and grace to walk through them.

The Gospel challenges us to recognize that holiness is often found in ordinary acts of love. A welcoming heart, a listening ear, a helping hand, a word of encouragement, or a simple act of kindness can become powerful signs of God's presence. Mother Teresa often said, "Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love." The Lord notices and treasures even the smallest gestures offered in His name.

As another school year comes to an end, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our students, teachers, staff, and parents. Thank you for your dedication, perseverance, and sacrifices throughout the year. Education is not merely the formation of the mind but also the formation of character, faith, and values. Your efforts help build a stronger community and a brighter future.

May the summer months ahead provide opportunities for rest, renewal, and quality time with family and friends. May they also be a time to deepen your relationship with the Lord, who remains the source of all joy and peace.

Let us continue to place Christ at the center of our lives. When He is first, everything else finds its proper place.

May God bless you and your loved ones abundantly.
