Dear Parishioners,
Happy September to everyone! September is a beautiful month in Vancouver. The warmth of summer gently gives way to cooler mornings, the days begin to shorten, and nature slowly prepares for the changing season. It is a month of transition—a time to begin again with renewed hope, gratitude, and trust in God.
One of the great celebrations of September is the Birthday of Mother Mary, which we celebrate on September 8. Mary reminds us that every life is a gift from God and that true greatness comes through humility, faith, and openness to God's will. May we learn from her simple prayer: “Let it be done to me according to your word.”
September also marks the beginning of a new school year. We warmly welcome all our teachers, school staff, and students. May this new year be filled with learning, friendship, growth, and discovery. Let us also remember the parents and families who accompany and support their children. May God give them wisdom, patience, and strength as they guide their children.
The Pope’s intention for September calls us to pray for the care of water: “Let us pray for a just and sustainable management of water, a vital resource, so that everyone may have equal access to it.” Water is life. Yet we are also reminded that when nature turns its fury upon us, water can become devastatingly destructive. The recent flooding in Nepal is a painful reminder of this reality. Let us pray for those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods, and for all who are suffering from this tragedy.
The Scripture readings of this Sunday also give us three important challenges for our Christian life. First, we are called to speak the truth. Like the prophet Ezekiel, we cannot remain silent when truth and justice are at stake. Especially those entrusted with preaching God's Word must never dilute the truth merely to make it comfortable.
Second, we are called to love. St. Paul reminds us: “Owe no one anything, except to love one another” (Romans 13:8). Love is the greatest debt we can never fully repay.
Finally, we are called to correct one another with charity. Fraternal correction is not condemnation; it is a responsibility born of love. Jesus teaches us to help one another return to the right path.
May September be a month of new beginnings, deeper faith, sincere love, and renewed responsibility. May Mother Mary, whose birthday we celebrate, accompany our parish community and lead us always closer to her Son, Jesus.
